Bluewater Photo announces the Release of the the Nauticam MFO-3 Mid-range Focus Optimizer 3

The Nauticam MFO‑3 (Mid-range Focus Optimizer 3) is a water-contact relay lens designed to optimize the working distance and image clarity when using 50-100 mm-class macro lenses in underwater imaging systems. Developed by Nauticam, the MFO‑3 functions as a mid-range focus enhancer and is part of the brand’s expanding line of wet optics compatible with the Nauticam housing ecosystem. This accessory modifies the optical pathway between the housed macro lens and the underwater environment, converting field of view and extending the lens's usable focus range while maintaining image sharpness and minimizing focus breathing.

The Nauticam MFO-3 is the successor to the original Nauticam MFO-1 and is built for photographers seeking improved focus stability and working flexibility at moderate subject distances—particularly in situations where conventional macro setups may fall short due to limited field of view or tight working space.

Primary Function of the Nauticam MFO‑3

The Nauticam MFO-3 wet lens serves three key functions:

  • Extends effective working distance of 100 mm macro lenses underwater—up to 1500 mm (1.5 m).
  • Converts the native field of view (FOV) from approximately 23° to a wider 38°, allowing broader composition without changing lenses.
  • Maintains optical clarity and focus stability across the mid-range, especially helpful for video and stills of medium-sized subjects or scenes.

It is particularly effective when shooting with the Nikon Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S lens, where it enables a consistent image plane and extended focal working range compared to the lens's performance behind a flat port alone.

Comparison with Nauticam MFO‑1 and SMC‑3

The Nauticam MFO-1 was the first in the series of mid-range focus optimizers and offers a higher magnification (up to 1.2×) with a shorter working distance (~108–1005 mm). The MFO-1 Nauticam is better suited for tighter macro compositions where proximity to small subjects is possible and desired. In contrast, the Nauticam MFO-3 provides a lower peak magnification (0.9×) but offers a substantially longer working range (up to 1500 mm), enabling more flexibility and safer shooting distance—especially beneficial for shy or mobile subjects. The SMC‑3 (Super Macro Converter 3) is another member of the Nauticam macro wet lens system but is targeted at extreme close-up macro. It delivers significantly higher magnification (~2.3×), but with a much narrower working range of ~46–98 mm. The SMC‑3 is primarily used for shooting very small subjects (e.g., pygmy seahorses, skeleton shrimp) at close proximity, where precise focusing and tight framing are required.
