On a routine night dive in Okinawa, underwater photographer Brandon Hannan came across an extraordinary macro scene!

Nudibranch Encounters Pygmy Squid: Story Behind the Shot

Brandon Hannan
On a routine night dive in Okinawa, underwater photographer Brandon Hannan came across an extraordinary macro scene!

The Discovery

This was like any other night dive that I had been on before. We entered from shore at a spot called Maeda Point. It's a popular tourist destination during the day here in Okinawa, Japan, but at night it’s a whole new world with little to no divers.

Early in the dive, I spotted a small nudibranch, a Bornella anguilla, and started setting my camera rig up to get some shots. When I got closer I noticed that there was also an un-described pygmy squid, that we have been collecting and researching, sitting right under the nudibranch. This amazed me!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Brandon is new to photography but is very passionate about Cephalopods. He uses his free time to dive and to study the different species found off the coast of Okinawa, Japan. He would love to one day write a book and publish photos with the specific cephalopod species of Japan. Japan in general has the highest concentration of un-described/un-discovered species in the world. You can follow him on Instagram (@brandon_hannan_photography) for daily photos of cephalopods and more.

Top Ten Underwater Cameras

When it comes to finding the perfect camera for underwater photography, you can't go wrong in today's marketplace. There was a time in the early era of digital cameras when you got what you paid for - DSLRs were the top marvels of technology on the market, and compact, point-and-shoots resembled toys. But now you can have your cake and eat it too.

Converting images to black & white using Lightroom, Photoshop, and Silver Efex Pro 2

How to convert images to black & white

How to convert images to black & white

Converting images to black & white using Lightroom, Photoshop, and Silver Efex Pro 2

Black & White images

Why do we find ourselves attracted to black & white images? Are they more poignant than color images? Do they have a stronger narrative?  I can’t really provide any definitive answers to those questions. What I can say is that removing color from a photograph does seem to focus our attention on the subject matter more acutely. Yet another question, what’s our goal?

Best United Kingdom Dive Destination for Underwater Photography

Where is the best dive destination in the UK?

If asked where the best UK diving for underwater photography is, Scottish sea lochs may just top my list. Although the UK has many other places with excellent diving.  A sea loch is an extended arm of the sea, often narrow, and partially landlocked. For the underwater photographer who enjoys macro photography there is a plethora of subjects to work on.
