Conservation Photographer, Duncan Murrell, tells the story behind a photo seen around the world....

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Duncan Murrell is a 65 year old British conservation, nature and travel photographer, artist, writer and environmental educator whose work has revolved around sea kayaking in some of the world’s wildest places for many years. It all began in Southeast Alaska 35 years ago where he discovered kayaking as a non-intrusive means of getting close to humpback whales to photograph them, and it was a love affair that lasted for nearly two decades. His whale photos were published extensively worldwide and used by all of the big conservation organisations for their Save the Whale campaigns. His passion for photographing humpback whales culminated with him winning the mammal behaviour category in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition in 2002 with another photo being highly commended. Consequently he was commissioned to write about his experiences for the BBC Wildlife Magazine and a photo of him kayaking with the whales was featured on the cover. In 2010 the photos and story of “the Whaleman”, as he became known in the many schools where he taught for the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, were featured in eight UK national newspapers. Other kayaking journeys followed on from Alaska, including the Gulf of California, Madagascar, where he was the first person to kayak up the exposed east coast, Palawan, New Caledonia and very recently Raja Ampat. He has adopted Palawan as the main base for his photography adventures in Asia and the Pacific, and has been photographing whale sharks and mobulids there for more than ten years. As a dedicated conservation photographer he has also been involved with elephant conservation in Sri Lanka, rainforest conservation in Palawan and most recently Kalimantan where he works with the Borneo Nature Foundation. Wolf Eels: A Face Only a Mother Could Love

Nirupam Nigam
Photographing one of the world's ugliest and most charismatic fish

There are a lot of ugly fish in the sea. Which one is the ugliest? Well, it’s really hard to say. There are a lot. So many, in fact, this is a frequent topic of debate among divers, scientists, and late-night TV hosts. Having scientifically identified thousands upon thousands of fish at sea in the North Pacific, it’s still quite hard for me to pick my top contenders. But without a doubt, wolf eels (Anarrhichthys ocellatus) rank in the top five.

Often overlooked as a dive destination, the Dominican Republic is more than an all-inclusive resort getaway

Beyond the Resorts: Diving in the Dominican Republic

Nirupam Nigam
Often overlooked as a dive destination, the Dominican Republic is more than an all-inclusive resort getaway

Situated in the between the rugged Atlantic Ocean and the placid Caribbean Sea, the Dominican Republic is as diverse and history rich as it is famous for mainstream tourism. Normal tourist haunts such as Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, and Boca Chica can make it seem like one big party on the beach with huge cruise ships passing by, and all-inclusive resorts as far the eye can see. But as with all mass tourism, there’s a lot more to be found behind the glitz and glamour.

La Paz, a classic big-animal destination, through the lens of a mollusk photographer

La Paz Through a Mollusk Photographer's Lens

La Paz, a classic big-animal destination, through the lens of a mollusk photographer

Editor’s Note: Charles Rawlings is a respected mollusk specialist who has published two books with his underwater photography. You can learn more about his latest offering at this link: Living Mollusks. His previous contribution to the guide was an engaging piece about using a TG-5 to supplement his DSLR rig.

Article:

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

After graduating from Duke University for undergraduate studies, Charles E. Rawlings attended Duke University School of Medicine where he became a distinguished neurosurgeon. After practicing neurosurgery for over ten years, Dr. Rawlings decided to add another career path and attended Wake Forest University School of Law, where he was named a Juris Doctor in 2002. Dr. Rawlings currently owns and operates The Rawlings Law Firm of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  Moreover, he has over 56 publications in various journals and dive publications covering a multitude of subjects.

Although Dr. Rawlings has ventured into the academic areas of both medicine and law, his true passions stem from underwater photography and travel.  For over 30 years, Charles has traveled the globe fulfilling his desire to capture life under the sea in its natural habitat.  With a focus upon living shells, Charles has taken part in over 50 photographic displays and a myriad of worldwide expeditions.  If malachological expeditions in Union Island, Roatan, Manus Islands, Mozambique, North West Sulawesi, and Palawan weren't enough, add in scuba diving, underwater and regular photography expeditions in areas such as the Cayman Islands, Yucatan, Netherland Antilles, Kona Coast of Hawaii, U.S. Virgin Islands, the Red Sea, Belize, Honduras, and other remote parts of the planet.

Charles Rawlings' exquisite and seemingly impossible photography has graced the cover of American Conchologist 14 times, as well as being on the back cover twice.  Photography that mystifies the mind, tempts the senses, and exemplifies nature's beauty is what can be found behind the lens of Dr. Charles Rawlings.

An underwater photographer takes macro with a compact camera to the limits

Pushing the Limits of Macro with a Compact Camera

An underwater photographer takes macro with a compact camera to the limits

I started diving 20 years ago while on holiday in the Dominican Republic, and fell in love with it immediately. Then, I tried my first muck diving, and found I love that too. It was like playing in the mud and reminded me of my childhood! But my big passion for underwater macro photography only started two years ago with a holiday in Lembeh Strait.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

She loves travelling, especially in Indonesia. Her big love for underwater macro photography started there about 2 years ago. Since then she has done her best to share her passion for the tiny and super tiny underwater critters with the world. Follow her on Instagram @kathrin_underwater if you would like to see more.

Panasonic S Series: First Look & Review

Nirupam Nigam
Notable features and lens additions to the new Panasonic S series scheduled to come out early 2019

This year’s theme in the world of photography is undeniably full-frame mirrorless. Although the idea took half a decade to catch on after Leica and Sony’s initial releases, full-frame mirrorless cameras are now spearheading the evolution of photographic technology. In the past year we’ve seen announcements from Nikon and Canon releasing their first flagship full-frame mirrorless options in an effort to compete with Sony’s ever-evolving alpha cameras.

Top Ten Tips for Nice Underwater Bokeh

Nirupam Nigam
Every wondered how to get a nice bokeh (blur) in your underwater photos? Here are our top ten tips....

One of the most frequent questions I hear from new photographers is “how do I get blurry backgrounds in my photos?” Bokeh, the Japanese word for fuzzy or blurry, describes the quality of the blur in the out-of-focus area in an image. To get a nice blurry background is to have nice “bokeh.”

Getting nice bokeh can be hard enough as it is above water. Getting good bokeh underwater can be even more challenging when considering factors such as backscatter, artificial lighting, moving subjects, and complex substrate/backgrounds.
