Detailed impressions using the new Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II camera underwater

The newest release for Olympus' popular OM-D line of mirrorless cameras is the new OM-D E-M5 Mark II. Instead of continuing the tradition of adding a new model number to the line up, Olympus has returned to the original, ground breaking OM-D E-M5 and updated it, creating the Mark II version. While this may seem confusing it is a very common practice, and helps to keep the different classes of OM-D camera organized.

We test and compare strobe power, recycle time, weight and modeling lights on the YS-D2 and YS-D1

SEA&SEA YS-D2 vs YS-D1 Strobe Comparison

SEA&SEA YS-D2 vs YS-D1 Strobe Comparison
Brent Durand
We test and compare strobe power, recycle time, weight and modeling lights on the YS-D2 and YS-D1

The SEA&SEA YS-D2 strobe is the latest in a line of very popular strobes for underwater photography. Compact, powerful and quick to recycle, the YS-D1 took the dive world by storm. The YS-D2 builds on this success, adding some new features and addressing some of the minor "inconveniences" of the previous model.

We decided to test the new YS-D2 against the YS-D1. Kelli also took two demo YS-D2s to the Sea of Cortez for a week of real world testing. This is what we've found.

The story and photos behind the birth of the new Sisters' Islands Marine Park
By Victor Tang

Singapore’s First Marine Park

Victor Tang
The story and photos behind the birth of the new Sisters' Islands Marine Park

Singapore, a tiny city-state in the heart of Southeast Asia, evokes images of streets that are clean and safe, Formula 1 racing under the stars and unforgettable eclectic cuisine. Singapore is home to the second busiest port in the world, which is now just a footnote in its curriculum vitae as this small island continues to glitz itself up. Singapore’s southern ocean, long the perennial lifeblood of the nation, is about to have its day in the sun again, for an audacious project is taking place just five kilometers from the mainland: setting up a Marine Park right within the port limits.

How to capture dramatic photos of manta rays in shallow water
By Rodney Bursiel

3 Tips to Capture Manta Ray Action

Rodney Bursiel
How to capture dramatic photos of manta rays in shallow water

I recently read an article that noted human encounters with giant mantas are very rare. This may be true in most areas, but not in the Socorro Islands. If you are looking for the perfect opportunity to photograph these gentle giants, this is the place. The dive site El Boiler off the island of San Benedicto is a cleaning station where the mantas come in for a cleaning by the resident clarion fish. They tend to be very curious and love getting bubble baths from the divers.

Below are a few tips that will help you bring home some exciting images.

A review of the TG-4 and housing for underwater photo and video, including new RAW recording and Microscope Mode

The Olympus Tough TG-4 compact camera sits in a class by itself. The 16MP camera is waterproof, shockproof, crushproof, freezeproof and dustproof.... oh, and it even has a dive housing for serious underwater photography. This combination makes the Olympus TG-4 a great camera for those who put their cameras through demanding topside and underwater use but don't want the bulk and expense of larger systems.

What Photographers Need to Know about Diving Bimini's Hammerhead Headquarters

What Photographers Need to Know about Diving Bimini's Hammerhead Headquarters

In January of 2013 I saw Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center posting beautiful pictures of great hammerhead sharks. Like any shark lover and underwater photographer would in that circumstance, I immediately messaged them and asked how I could join the action. Three days later I was underwater with my absolute favorite shark. At the time it was a revelation; a new spot that promised what no other could.
