Muck, Walls, and Turtles in the Heart of Bohol
By Nirupam Nigam
Muck, Walls, and Turtles in the Heart of Bohol
The Philippines is a scuba diving mecca. Sitting at the northern edge of the Coral Triangle, its reefs are some of the most biodiverse on the planet. This diversity translates to dives full of encounters with small critters - especially in renowned muck destinations like Anilao and Dumaguete.

The Skookumchuck Narrows is the World's Fastest Tidal Rapids with a Rainbow of Life
By Nirupam Nigam
The Skookumchuck Narrows is the World's Fastest Tidal Rapids with a Rainbow of Life
The Skookumchuck Narrows, or the "Skook" as it is commonly known among divers, is a narrow channel of water in the Salish Sea just north of Vancouver, Canada. Because the inlet is so shallow and narrow, a single tide can force 200 X 10^9 gallons of water through the narrows. Such a massive movement of water produces standing waves, whirlpools, whitecaps, and currents up to 16 knots (i.e., 30 km/h or 18 mph).

Best United Kingdom Dive Destination for Underwater Photography
By Robert Bailey
Best United Kingdom Dive Destination for Underwater Photography
If asked where the best UK diving for underwater photography is, Scottish sea lochs may just top my list. Although the UK has many other places with excellent diving. A sea loch is an extended arm of the sea, often narrow, and partially landlocked. For the underwater photographer who enjoys macro photography there is a plethora of subjects to work on.

Our adventure on the Socorro Vortex was awash with good people, good food, ample amounts of adventure, and great white sharks

Our adventure on the Socorro Vortex was awash with good people, good food, ample amounts of adventure, and great white sharks
In the depths of the pulsating, blue matrix of the Pacific, few things are ever certain. Creatures of the deep come and go as they please, winds have no master, and water seems to infiltrate even the most secure dry bags and camera housings. One day can bring swaths of life, and the next barren wasteland.
Nevertheless, a trip aboard the Socorro Vortex taught me that a few things at sea can be certain – good food, kind people, and camaraderie in a shared adventure.

A photographer’s guide to the best macro and wide angle shooting in Malapascua, beyond the world-famous thresher sharks
By Bryan Chu
A photographer’s guide to the best macro and wide angle shooting in Malapascua, beyond the world-famous thresher sharks
Unless you stay out of social media, you have probably heard about Malapascua. The main draw is the thresher sharks that congregate at the Monad Shoal every morning to be cleaned. Yes, they are really cool, and they are a great reason to go to Malapascua.

Bryan is an editor and writer for the Underwater Photography Guide. He loves any activity that takes him out into nature, and is especially fond of multi-day hiking trips, road trips to National Parks, and diving. Any kind of diving. He discovered the joy of underwater photography on a Bluewater trip to the Sea of Cortez and has been hooked ever since. He recently finished a 1-year "radical sabbatical" with his partner Lisa (both of them quit their jobs), which included over 120 dives, mostly in Indonesia and the Philippines. His very favourite underwater experiences include swimming with humpbacks in Moorea, being smashed against the rocks next to marine iguanas in the Galapagos, marvelling at the riotously colourful reefs of Komodo, freezing his hands off under the ice in Greenland, and exploring the never-ending wonders of muck diving in Tulamben and Anilao (where he was a Bluewater photo workshop co-trip leader).
Fortunately, Bryan and Lisa managed to avoid killing each other during their year of traveling together (though at times it came close). Now they are back home in Canada, planning their wedding and doing their best to figure out what they want to be when they grow up. Their main concern at this point is finding a way to not run out of money, while avoiding returning back to their old 9-5 jobs (oil & gas, government). Oh, and also continuing to support their diving and underwater photo/video habits...
You can find more of Bryan's underwater photos on Instagram at @bryan_chu_photography and on his website at www.bryanchu.ca.

Komodo is a world-class dive destination, with amazingly healthy reefs bursting with colors, and huge schools of fish. However, unlike some of its peers, it can be dived on a budget!

Komodo. The word evokes in me an immediate feeling of longing and nostalgia. I want to go back, badly...even though it’s only been 4 months since I was there. There’s something about the place that has jammed itself into my memory and won’t let go. Or maybe it was more so the entire experience, not just the park itself. Yes, it is spectacular above-water and below. Yes, the dive sites have the healthiest and most fish-crammed reefs I have ever seen. Yes, we had big animals swim right up to us multiple times.
