Let there be light!

Focus lights serve to make life easier for underwater photographers. This is particularly true when working in low light conditions, or at night when your camera's auto-focus system may struggle to lock onto subjects quickly.

Everything you need to know to get sharp, in-focus photos of sea lions when they are moving really fast and coming really close!
By Bryan Chu

Ultimate Guide to Photographing Sea Lions Up Close

Bryan Chu
Everything you need to know to get sharp, in-focus photos of sea lions when they are moving really fast and coming really close!

My first couple of times trying to photograph sea lions, I didn't quite get things right. In fact, I got quite a few things wrong. Fortunately, though, I learned a lot along the way. Now with a lot of experience under my belt, I've put together everything I've learned about how to make the most of any encounters you get with sea lions, or other super fast underwater animals that come really close.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Bryan is an editor and writer for the Underwater Photography Guide. He loves any activity that takes him out into nature, and is especially fond of multi-day hiking trips, road trips to National Parks, and diving. Any kind of diving. He discovered the joy of underwater photography on a Bluewater trip to the Sea of Cortez and has been hooked ever since. He recently finished a 1-year "radical sabbatical" with his partner Lisa (both of them quit their jobs), which included over 120 dives, mostly in Indonesia and the Philippines. His very favourite underwater experiences include swimming with humpbacks in Moorea, being smashed against the rocks next to marine iguanas in the Galapagos, marvelling at the riotously colourful reefs of Komodo, freezing his hands off under the ice in Greenland, and exploring the never-ending wonders of muck diving in Tulamben and Anilao (where he was a Bluewater photo workshop co-trip leader).

Fortunately, Bryan and Lisa managed to avoid killing each other during their year of traveling together (though at times it came close). Now they are back home in Canada, planning their wedding and doing their best to figure out what they want to be when they grow up. Their main concern at this point is finding a way to not run out of money, while avoiding returning back to their old 9-5  jobs (oil & gas, government). Oh, and also continuing to support their diving and underwater photo/video habits...

You can find more of Bryan's underwater photos on Instagram at @bryan_chu_photography and on his website at www.bryanchu.ca.

Top Ten Underwater Cameras

When it comes to finding the perfect camera for underwater photography, you can't go wrong in today's marketplace. There was a time in the early era of digital cameras when you got what you paid for - DSLRs were the top marvels of technology on the market, and compact, point-and-shoots resembled toys. But now you can have your cake and eat it too.

Converting images to black & white using Lightroom, Photoshop, and Silver Efex Pro 2

How to convert images to black & white

How to convert images to black & white

Converting images to black & white using Lightroom, Photoshop, and Silver Efex Pro 2

Black & White images

Why do we find ourselves attracted to black & white images? Are they more poignant than color images? Do they have a stronger narrative?  I can’t really provide any definitive answers to those questions. What I can say is that removing color from a photograph does seem to focus our attention on the subject matter more acutely. Yet another question, what’s our goal?
