A guide to in-camera compression and its affects on image quality and storage

Compact, mirrorless and dslr cameras offer several file formats when it comes to recording your underwater images. The two most common are jpeg and RAW.  Both formats offer levels of compression to choose from, each with their own benefits.

Black Backgrounds and Strobe Techniques

Inward-facing strobe positioning is a technique which allows you to take many more black background macro shots than you could just using standard forward-facing strobes. It is simple in theory but surprisingly difficult to master underwater.

The intent of this article is to provide a strobe positioning technique to allow you to shoot black background images in more shooting situations (a lot more). If you are not familiar with shooting black background images using traditional forward-facing strobe positioning, then check out this black background tutorial first. If you want to learn about basic strobe positioning, check out this strobe position tutorial.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Bryan is an editor and writer for the Underwater Photography Guide. He loves any activity that takes him out into nature, and is especially fond of multi-day hiking trips, road trips to National Parks, and diving. Any kind of diving. He discovered the joy of underwater photography on a Bluewater trip to the Sea of Cortez and has been hooked ever since. He recently finished a 1-year "radical sabbatical" with his partner Lisa (both of them quit their jobs), which included over 120 dives, mostly in Indonesia and the Philippines. His very favourite underwater experiences include swimming with humpbacks in Moorea, being smashed against the rocks next to marine iguanas in the Galapagos, marvelling at the riotously colourful reefs of Komodo, freezing his hands off under the ice in Greenland, and exploring the never-ending wonders of muck diving in Tulamben and Anilao (where he was a Bluewater photo workshop co-trip leader).

Fortunately, Bryan and Lisa managed to avoid killing each other during their year of traveling together (though at times it came close). Now they are back home in Canada, planning their wedding and doing their best to figure out what they want to be when they grow up. Their main concern at this point is finding a way to not run out of money, while avoiding returning back to their old 9-5  jobs (oil & gas, government). Oh, and also continuing to support their diving and underwater photo/video habits...

Komodo is a world-class dive destination, with amazingly healthy reefs bursting with colors, and huge schools of fish. However, unlike some of its peers, it can be dived on a budget!

Komodo. The word evokes in me an immediate feeling of longing and nostalgia. I want to go back, badly...even though it’s only been 4 months since I was there. There’s something about the place that has jammed itself into my memory and won’t let go. Or maybe it was more so the entire experience, not just the park itself. Yes, it is spectacular above-water and below. Yes, the dive sites have the healthiest and most fish-crammed reefs I have ever seen. Yes, we had big animals swim right up to us multiple times.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K features 6k resolution, a larger sensor, and dual gain ISO

Blackmagic Design is a leader in bringing the art of cinema to the masses. Normally, movie production involves cameras that are so crushingly expensive, a single cinema camera body might cost the same as a nice car. Well, Blackmagic Design has just introduced the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K for 10% of the price of its competitors and featuring 6K video, a super 35mm sensor, dual gain ISO, and a whole lot more. It’s an amazing time to be a video shooter, especially underwater.

Canon SL3 Review: World's Smallest Underwater DSLR

Nirupam Nigam
The Canon EOS Rebel SL3 combined with the Ikelite Housing is the smallest and lightest DSLR underwater system on the market

When I first heard about the release of the Canon EOS Rebel SL3 as “the world’s smallest DSLR,” I thought the phrase sounded a little gimmicky. Afterall, isn’t that what mirrorless and compact cameras are for? But then I got a call from John at Ikelite.

Best underwater settings for the Olympus TG-5 and TG-6

Olympus TG-5 and TG-6 Underwater Settings
Nirupam Nigam
Best underwater settings for the Olympus TG-5 and TG-6

The Olympus TG-5 and TG-6 are two of the most popular compact cameras currently on the market for underwater photographers. They are notable for their amazing durability, waterproofing down to 50 ft without a housing, beautiful image quality, and impressive macro capability. Because the TG-6 was a somewhat superficial upgrade from the TG-5, there are relatively few differences between the cameras.
