How having a simple plan before the dive can help improve your underwater photography

Have you ever taken several underwater photos on a dive but weren’t happy with any of them?  We would be incredibly lucky if all of our images turned out exactly how we intended them to, but underwater photography is an ongoing learning experience especially with all the variations in lighting, subjects and conditions.  In this article I’d like to go over how staying focused and having a simple plan before the dive can help yield better results and overall satisfaction with your photos.

A step by step guide/tutorial to using Photoshop to remove large amounts of backscatter quickly and efficiently

How to Remove Backscatter Quickly & Easily with Photoshop

Bryan Chu
A step by step guide/tutorial to using Photoshop to remove large amounts of backscatter quickly and efficiently

Other than sorting and culling photos, backscatter removal is probably the most time-consuming and painful part of post-processing underwater photos. Especially if you shoot a lot of wide angle, and like getting really close to your subjects (as you should!).

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Bryan is an editor and writer for the Underwater Photography Guide. He loves any activity that takes him out into nature, and is especially fond of multi-day hiking trips, road trips to National Parks, and diving. Any kind of diving. He discovered the joy of underwater photography on a Bluewater trip to the Sea of Cortez and has been hooked ever since. He recently finished a 1-year "radical sabbatical" with his partner Lisa (both of them quit their jobs), which included over 120 dives, mostly in Indonesia and the Philippines. His very favourite underwater experiences include swimming with humpbacks in Moorea, being smashed against the rocks next to marine iguanas in the Galapagos, marvelling at the riotously colourful reefs of Komodo, freezing his hands off under the ice in Greenland, and exploring the never-ending wonders of muck diving in Tulamben and Anilao (where he was a Bluewater photo workshop co-trip leader).

Fortunately, Bryan and Lisa managed to avoid killing each other during their year of traveling together (though at times it came close). Now they are back home in Canada, planning their wedding and doing their best to figure out what they want to be when they grow up. Their main concern at this point is finding a way to not run out of money, while avoiding returning back to their old 9-5  jobs (oil & gas, government). Oh, and also continuing to support their diving and underwater photo/video habits...

You can find more of Bryan's underwater photos on Instagram at @bryan_chu_photography and on his website at www.bryanchu.ca.

Green Sea Turtles: Getting to know the world's largest sea turtles

Green sea turtles are found throughout the world. Hawaiian green sea turtles, or honu, are native to Hawaii and have long been part of Hawaiian traditions and culture. They are still revered to some today as a symbol of a guardian spirit, or ‘aumakua.  Honu are not only the largest of all sea turtles but also genetically unique.

A unique lens that can capture an amazing “bug-eye” perspective of the world’s oceans...tricky to use, but worth the effort!

The Laowa 24mm f/14 2X Macro Probe, aka “Bug Eye” lens, made by Venus Optics, might as well be the world’s coolest lens. It reeks of modern innovation – from a crowdfunded origin to a 2:1 macro-wide-angle-hybrid capability. This lens offers a viewpoint so unique it can’t be seen with the human eye and truly brings you down to the perspective of the tiny creatures that inhabit this planet.

Swimming with Crocodiles in Banco Chinchorro

A thrilling, adrenaline-packed experience swimming with and photographing wild crocodiles in Banco Chinchorro, Mexico

Originally, the thought of getting in the water with a crocodile scared the daylights out of me. But now that I’ve done it, I can honestly say that discovering the Banco Chinchorro expedition, pushing myself to overcome my fear, and coming face-to-face with these modern-day dinosaurs has been the most enlightening experience of my life!

A full review of Olympus Tough TG-6's underwater performance, ergonomics, and updates to the TG-5.

Before the review the Olympus TG-6, let's talk about its predecessor. The Olympus TG-5 waterproof camera has been the go-to camera for compact and macro underwater photographers since its release in May, 2017. Two years later, the underwater photographic community has been itching for an upgrade. After all, who doesn’t want an even better version of an already amazing camera?

Diving Nusa Penida, Bali

Nusa Penida and Lembongan are world-class diving destinations with phenomenal encounters with mantas, turtles, and octopus, as well as beautiful drift dives along pristine reefs, and mola mola during mola season.

The islands of Nusa Penida and Lembongan, just off Bali, are one of those magical places where large waves pound the shores, and strong currents bring nutrients from the deep, creating a veritable explosion of underwater life. I spent 4 days scuba diving there with my partner Lisa, and even in this short period of time we had some of the most memorable underwater encounters we have ever experienced. So let’s jump in!

An Octopus displays its wide range of camouflage techniques in his garden under the sea...

An Unforgettable Octopus Encounter

An Octopus displays its wide range of camouflage techniques in his garden under the sea...

I spent a few days diving in the clear, temperamental waters of Nusa Penida, Bali*. The main draws to Nusa Penida are the big things: manta rays and mola mola. One morning we dove a site called Manta Bay, which is, of course, known for mantas. The visibility wasn't great, as usual at manta dive sites.
