Canon 5D Mk IV Underwater Video Review

Mike Raabe
Review of the 5D Mk IV for video, including HDR shooting, ISO tests, dual-pixel autofocus, dynamic range and 4K resolution image quality

The Canon 5D mk IV is the long awaiting upgrade to the 5D mk III.  It seeks to be an all around powerhouse with many new features for stills and video. This review will focus on the video features of the 5D mk IV. The ability to shoot 4K at 24/30 fps, 1080p at 60fps, and 720p at 120fps is a welcomed addition to the 5D line of cameras.

An inside look at the scuba diving and underwater photo opportunities in Yap, Micronesia

An inside look at the scuba diving and underwater photo opportunities in Yap, Micronesia

Our latest installment of Paul & Lisa's Dispatch series brings photos from an iconic dive destination in Micronesia.

Google up some images from Yap.

If there’s ever a selection of photos that conjure up what most people think the Tropical Pacific is, then these are it! Blue water, white sandy beaches, palm trees, amazing culture and beautiful people.

Article:

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Paul and Lisa are an Australian couple originating from Australia’s East Coast. Of their 20 years of marriage they have lived on their private yachts Purranha and Lorelei for 14 years and have been full time sailing/cruising for 9 of those years. Their latest expedition began in 2011 onboard Lorelei with the main purpose to dive many of the world’s best dive locations. To date they have explored 22 countries in the South Pacific, North Pacific and Asia – covering a distance of over 24 000 nautical miles.

They are independent divers and can proudly say that over 95% of their underwater images were taken whilst diving by themselves from their purpose built dive tender on board Lorelei. They are PADI pros and have over 8000 dives between them. Due to the harsh conditions of sailing life, they choose Nikon, Ikelite and Aquatica photographic equipment.

More information and images of their travels can be found on their blog:

Lightroom Tricks: Adjusting Tones using the Histogram

Erik Lukas
Make your images pop by fine tuning their tonal range with this quick Lightroom editing technique

In this article I wanted to share a method I use to adjust the tonal range of my images. As with most things in life, there is usually more than one way to get the result you are after. In Adobe Lightroom that holds true for many of the tasks that photographers use during the image editing process.

What is tonal range? In photography, the tonal range is the spread of values from the lightest to darkest areas of an image, from pure white to solid black, if you will.

The best photo and video settings for shooting the Canon G7 X Mark II underwater, including depth of field, shutter speed for strobes and more

The Canon G7 X Mark II is a powerful compact camera capable of creating some exceptional underwater photo and video... with the right settings, of course.

It's one of our favorite compact cameras, built around a large 1" image sensor and a great lens. A fast processor enables lighting-quick autofocus for both photo and video shooting. The small size of the compact system is the perfect compromise between easy travel and excellent image quality.

The Panasonic LX100 is a very capable camera for underwater photography and videography, as well as a small but advanced compact camera that is great to carry around.

The image sensor is a 16MP micro four-thirds sensor that Panasonic has used in a number of its interchangeable lens cameras. It is a multi-aspect design (see aspect ratios below) with an effective resolution of 12.8MP.

Quick tips to ensure that you are picking your best and most creative photos when entering underwater photo competitions

How to Choose Photos for a Competition

Martin Toole
Quick tips to ensure that you are picking your best and most creative photos when entering underwater photo competitions

It's the end of the year, which means one thing in photography, finding your best shots and photos to enter in to a competition. In a few weeks, the underwater photography competition at In-Water Photographer of the Year will be closing its doors for entry. So now is the best time to have a look through this years photographs you have taken and to see whether any could be entered in to this in-water comp.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Martin Toole:  I'm an avid freediver, scuba qualified and love spending most of my spare time in open water, lakes, rivers or the ocean.  There are new angles, new perspectives, sports being seen in a new light, all from the perspective of the ocean lover with fins on. I found a lot of the photos I wanted to take I could do without any scuba gear on, so now I take all my photos whilst freediving and snorkeling and there are plenty of other people doing this too. I created In-Water Photographer of the Year 2 years ago to celebrate all that is photography in-water, with a minimal of gear on.

Divers off Baja California experience magic moments with passing orcas in these natural encounters

Divers off Baja California experience magic moments with passing orcas in these natural encounters

We recently caught up with underwater photographer and Pelagic Life board director Jero Prieto after spotting his fantastic photo of two orcas under the surface, bathed in late afternoon light. In-water encounters with orcas (aka killer whales) are fairly rare, and natually, we wanted to share the photos and ask what went on behind the scenes. Below is our brief interview.

Where were you diving when you encountered the Orcas?
