Get lost in this underwater photo essay on the diving and critters in this remote area of Raja Ampat, Indonesia
By Paul & Lisa Hogger

Dispatch from Batanta Island

Paul & Lisa Hogger
Get lost in this underwater photo essay on the diving and critters in this remote area of Raja Ampat, Indonesia

Raja Ampat: a well-known diving mecca. It is diverse and stunning both above and below the water surface. The schools of fish and reefscapes are praised, but it has not been recognized as a macro / muck dive hotspot... until now!

After sailing our yacht through Raja Ampat for over 3 months, we had done more than 100 dives and were a little “wide-angled” out. We had experienced immense colour, soft corals and fish schools for the majority of the dives and we were looking for a change.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Paul and Lisa are an Australian couple originating from Australia’s East Coast. Of their 20 years of marriage they have lived on their private yachts Purranha and Lorelei for 14 years and have been full time sailing/cruising for 9 of those years. Their latest expedition began in 2011 onboard Lorelei with the main purpose to dive many of the world’s best dive locations. To date they have explored 22 countries in the South Pacific, North Pacific and Asia – covering a distance of over 24 000 nautical miles.

They are independent divers and can proudly say that over 95% of their underwater images were taken whilst diving by themselves from their purpose built dive tender on board Lorelei. They are PADI pros and have over 8000 dives between them. Due to the harsh conditions of sailing life, they choose Nikon, Ikelite and Aquatica photographic equipment.

More information and images of their travels can be found on their blog:

The Panasonic GH4 captures incredible 4K video quality and color, rivaling cameras costing many times more. Having shot underwater video with the GH4 since it was released in 2014, I want to share with you what I have learned to get the most of this camera to be able to produce the best possible underwater films.

Behind the scenes of Seaproof.tv's shipwreck minimentary featuring Jill Heinerth in a cold water explorer's paradise

Bell Island is a little known explorer’s paradise, a short distance from the city of St Johns, Newfoundland, Canada.

Our ‘Exploring Bell Island’ Minimentary came together after a week of diving as part of a group put together by Jill Heinerth on behalf of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, with the aim of documenting the historically significant shipwrecks.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Seaproof.tv is an underwater video company based in British Columbia, Canada, a partnership between Trisha Stovel and Russell Clark. Trisha was originally from Ontario; a dive instructor, underwater videographer, and ocean lover through and through. Russell moved to Canada from England just over 6 years ago, started diving, and never looked back. 3 years ago we formed Seaproof.tv as a way for two video and ocean lovers to combine forces; it’s been non stop videos, endless camera gear, and lots of diving ever since.

With a focus on underwater video, we produce unique content for small businesses, independent productions, and non-profits. But at the heart of what we do are our Minimentaries - and we’re just getting started. We have at least four more Minimentaries in the can, and an endless stream of ideas for new ones.

Explore a creative technique to get the most from wide-angle color when shooting with a single strobe and video light

How to Combine Strobe and Video Light

Explore a creative technique to get the most from wide-angle color when shooting with a single strobe and video light

Sometimes our creative inspiration comes from difficulties with gear in the field. This is the time when a solid understanding of the principals of photography might help save the shoot, the dive, and even the trip. During the recent Bluewater Photo workshop in Bali, Indonesia, the bulb on one of my YS-D1 strobes bulbs blew on day one.

2nd Great White Shark Breaches Dive Cage

Two different great white sharks have breached dive cages with divers in last 3 weeks, stirring the debate on shark chumming and wrangling

For the second time in weeks, a great white shark has breached a shark dive cage containing divers. Both events took place with different sharks on different boats at Mexico's famed shark diving mecca, Guadalupe Island. To be clear - THESE ARE NOT SHARK ATTACKS - but situations where sharks have been excited by fish chum and 'wrangling' in order to bring them close to the cages for photo opportunities.

A location you would not expect - after decades of research, the longest continuous coral system has been discovered.

Largest Continuous Coral System Found

Chino Mendoza
A location you would not expect - after decades of research, the longest continuous coral system has been discovered.

After two decades of exploration, scientists have discovered the largest continuous coral system surrounding the Hawaiian Islands.  Aside from the popular reefs found on the shallow, they also discovered more incredible reefs in mesophotic zone.  Also known as “twilight zone” with depths of 30 to 150 meters (100 to 500 feet) and is almost totally dark, they did not expect to see a higher cover percentage. "What is unique about this study is how vast and dense the coral cover is" according to Richard Pyle, lead researcher from Bishop Museum in Honolulu.

SeaLife Sea Dragon Flash Review

We test the compact and versatile SeaLife strobe in the Lembeh Strait, including full specs, best setup and shooting modes

The SeaLife Sea Dragon Flash delivers great light in a small package. Versatile in setup, it can be mounted to any camera via standard ball mount and clamp, or used with the Sea Dragon Flex-Connect accessories. The strobe is triggered via fiber optic cable and can be shot in manual or Automatic (TTL) mode, which allows it to be shot with any camera using an internal pop up flash.
