The Skookumchuck Narrows is the World's Fastest Tidal Rapids with a Rainbow of Life

The Skookumchuck Narrows, or the "Skook" as it is commonly known among divers, is a narrow channel of water in the Salish Sea just north of Vancouver, Canada. Because the inlet is so shallow and narrow, a single tide can force 200 X 10^9 gallons of water through the narrows. Such a massive movement of water produces standing waves, whirlpools, whitecaps, and currents up to 16 knots (i.e., 30 km/h or 18 mph).

First time underwater with the NEW Sea & Sea YS-D3 Duo Strobes

In the calm days preceding Hurricane Hillary's path along the western shores this August, I seized a golden opportunity to immerse myself in the balmy, crystal-clear waves along Southern California's coastline. To my delight I had some novel underwater gadgets at my disposal - the new cutting-edge Sea & Sea YS-D3 Duo Strobes fresh from Japan, accompanied by the newly released Ikelite Canon R100 System.

Farewell to Stan Waterman

Farewell to Stan Waterman

The diving and underwater imaging communities have lost an iconic and greatly loved personality with the recent passing of Stan Waterman at the age of 100.  Growing up in New Jersey and spending his summers in Delaware and Maine, becoming one of the world’s most revered underwater filmmakers was not an obvious career path for young Stan, although he did gain an appreciation for the underwater world when trying out his first facemask in Florida at age 11.  After serving in the US Navy during WWII and graduating from Dartmouth where he studied English under renowned poet Robert Fros
