A review of the Nikon 16-35mm F4 full frame lens for underwater photography

The Nikon 16-35mm F4 lens was never my first choice for a lens. In fact, for years I resisted using a rectilinear lens underwater, opting for the extremes of a fisheye lens or a macro lens. However, a trip to the Galapagos Islands called for a different beast, and I finally pulled the trigger and purchased a serious wide-angle zoom lens. Would I be happy with my decision?

Australian photographer captures a rare moment with a fish trapped inside a jellyfish

An Australian photographer, Tim Samuel, captured a rare moment underwater the other day, when a small fish swam inside the bell of a jellyfish.  Samuel captured this moment while free diving in Byron Bay, later posting the photo on his Instagram account. The photo, and several posted later, have since gone viral and are receiving global media attention.

We explore wide-angle and macro underwater photos from this off-the-beaten path dive destination.

We explore wide-angle and macro underwater photos from this off-the-beaten path dive destination.

If you took a chart of the Nusa Tenggara island chain in southern Indonesia and drew a horizontal line through the top of the islands, you would pass through some amazing dive destinations.

From West to East there would be Tulamben in Bali, The Gili Islands in Lombok, Komodo National Park, Maumere and finally at the farthest island east, Alor.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Paul and Lisa are an Australian couple originating from Australia’s East Coast. Of their 20 years of marriage they have lived on their private yachts Purranha and Lorelei for 14 years and have been full time sailing/cruising for 9 of those years. Their latest expedition began in 2011 onboard Lorelei with the main purpose to dive many of the world’s best dive locations. To date they have explored 22 countries in the South Pacific, North Pacific and Asia – covering a distance of over 24 000 nautical miles.

They are independent divers and can proudly say that over 95% of their underwater images were taken whilst diving by themselves from their purpose built dive tender on board Lorelei. They are PADI pros and have over 8000 dives between them. Due to the harsh conditions of sailing life, they choose Nikon, Ikelite and Aquatica photographic equipment.

More information and images of their travels can be found on their blog:

Worth the Wait? You Betcha! Complete housing review, detailed feedback and underwater photos from Aquatica’s Sony a7 II housing

Aquatica waited. They were late to the party in releasing their housing for the much celebrated Sony A7RII. While other manufacturers raced each other to market with early A7 versions, Aquatica stayed cool, took a step back and looked more carefully at the A7 camera design. They watched the evolution of the A7 series become what it is today - a very noteworthy high performance camera. The payoff? They released a pro level housing for the Sony A7R II the first time out. No kits, no retrofits, no redesigns. They did it right the first time. Definitely worth the wait!

Sync your photos to your digital dive profile through the Deepblu social platform and COSMIQ dive computer

Dive Logs, Photos and Social Media Combined

Sync your photos to your digital dive profile through the Deepblu social platform and COSMIQ dive computer

WiFi and NFC are being built into most modern cameras, from compact to DSLR, as photographers look to share images to social media while the action is still unfolding. Even the pro-level Canon 1DX Mk II has a wireless file transmitter! The next step is (naturally) to start syncing your photos with your digital dive log.

Deepblu has released an iOS dive log and social media app as well as the COSMIQ Dive Companion computer to do just that.

Use your dive or video light to create vibrant underwater photos with your compact camera without use of a strobe

How to Shoot Stills with a Dive Light

Use your dive or video light to create vibrant underwater photos with your compact camera without use of a strobe

The rare red rhinopias rocked forward through the perfect photo composition, greeted with a muffled "clack clack clack" as I fired off three shots at just the right moment. All three frames had excellent exposure, as there was no dark frame indicative of a strobe recycling to full power. There were also no flashes; these photos were shot using just my underwater video lights.
