After 5 years of solid and reliable use of my Nikon D300 and D300s camera & housing systems, I finally decided it was time for an upgrade. The new addition to the family would need to be a step up in capabilities and not just an increase in pixels. The choice wasn’t an easy one, as I have been holding out for the “New D400” or the next generation in the Prosumer Nikon camera lineup that isn’t full frame.

Unlike some of my warm water counterparts, my diving patch is located in Victoria, Australia. It rarely cracks 20 degrees Celsius, 20m visibility is astonishing and the vast majority of our ocean floor is a messy and complicated mix of weeds, sponges, broken shell and sand. Luckily, this visually puzzling bottom composition camouflages a treasure trove of macro life that surrounds our piers, and it can all be found in just a few meters of water.

Last September Olympus announced the next release in the OM-D line of micro four-thirds cameras. The first camera, the OM-D E-M5, was released in March 2012 and surpassed all expectations, becoming one of their most popular cameras to date. The E-M5 works wonderfully underwater, providing high quality images and dSLR-like controls in a smaller, compact body.
