Photographing Harlequin Shrimp in Indo-Pacific and Hawaii

Remember the scene in the original Karate Kid movie where the old sensei instructs his young protégé in the finer points of car polishing…. “wax on, wax off!”? Watching a pair of Harlequin Shrimp waving their flat, paddle-like claws in slow, concentric circles, I can’t get that scene out of my mind.

Top tips from a Pro Cenote Photographer
By Luke Coley

Top 11 Tips for Cenote Photography

Top 11 Tips for Cenote Photography
Luke Coley
Top tips from a Pro Cenote Photographer

The cenotes of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula offer a unique diving and underwater photographic opportunity. They have often been ranked among the world’s best freshwater dives, including these best cenotes in Tulum.  Distinct environmental features with unique lighting and variations in visibility provide a limitless backdrop of creative and technical challenges. It's a canvas that can product astounding images.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Luke Coley was born in Chippenham, England, and is now based in Mexico, where he continues to work as an instructor and photographer and run underwater photography trips. Mexico offers an incredible variety, it is somewhere he can incorporate my love of travel, big animals, and overhead environments all in one package.

As a child, his fascination with the ocean was stoked by local fishing and aquarium visits. This combined with an interest in sharks and rays eventually led him to scuba diving.

In 2011, after a move to Australia, his passion for the ocean and photography had a true chance to grow when he rented a Canon S90 while diving the Great Barrier Reef and snapped his first successful underwater photos of a Green Turtle.

His career in diving started in the form of selling tours in Vietnam and in 2013, He became a Dive Professional. Since then, he has had the opportunity to work around the world including Fiji, the Cayman Islands, Indonesia, Palau, Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands, and Mexico. He has dived in over 20 different countries while gaining the credentials of PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer, TDI Full Cave Diver, and SSI Level II Freediver.

As a photographer, he began shooting while working in Fuerteventura, taking shots for dive students. It was in Komodo that he purchased his first Olympus TG-4. In his spare time, he would dive the house reef and work on techniques.

The real leap was when he joined the Siren and Master Fleets of Worldwide Dive and Sail. He worked as a Cruise Director and Divemaster and was introduced to some of the world’s top underwater photographers, which inspired him to invest in a Sony A7R II in the Nauticam housing. This gave him the tools and the opportunity to really grow.

He is now based in Mexico, where he continues to work as an instructor and photographer. Mexico offers an incredible variety, it is somewhere he can incorporate my love of travel, big animals, and overhead environments all in one package.

Exploring incredible wrecks and northern wildlife
By Robert Bailey

Discovering Shetland, Scotland

Discovering Shetland, Scotland
Robert Bailey
Exploring incredible wrecks and northern wildlife

Winning a category in the Underwater Photographer of the Year competition for British Wide Angle is a tall order, and one I’m very proud of. I won a generous prize for a trip for two to Scapa Flow aboard MV Halton (www.mvhalton.co.uk), skippered by Bob Anderson. A vast majority of British divers would think I was mad to turn that down.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Robert has worked professionally on commercial television sets doing production photography, shot modern dance for the art department at the University of Calgary, and has worked in a freelance capacity shooting a variety of subjects. Rob worked as a NAUI scuba instructor, and then instructor trainer for the University of Calgary from 1993-1999. He is still an avid diver, and never dives without a camera.

He moved to Europe in the late 1990s and now resides in the UK.

Robert has enjoyed success in both national and international underwater photography competitions over the years. As a result his images have been published in national magazines, books, scientific publications, and newspapers in the UK. He’s an active committee member for the British Society of Underwater Photographers (BSoUP), and the website administrator for the Bristol Underwater Photography Group (BUPG). He’s written several articles for national dive magazines, and often gives presentations on his own underwater photography and photographic technique for photographic clubs in the UK.

Robert worked as a technical specialist, and then technical account manager in the IT industry for many years, and now works part time as a photographer, and full time as editor for the Underwater Photography Guide.
